A post-modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that comes after a noun to provide additional information about it.

Basic Structure

Noun + Post-Modifier

Example

โœ” The book on the table belongs to me.

  • Main noun = book
  • Post-modifier = on the table

The post-modifier tells us which book.

Pre-Modification

Information comes before the noun.

Combined Example

โœ” The expensive car parked outside belongs to my neighbour.

  • Pre-modifier = expensive
  • Post-modifier = parked outside

One of the most common post-modifiers is a prepositional phrase.

Relative clauses provide extra information about a noun.

Advanced users often shorten relative clauses.

Infinitive phrases can explain purpose or future possibility.

Examples

Present Participles (-ing)

โœ” The people standing near the gate are visitors.

Past Participles (-ed / Vยณ)

โœ” The documents signed yesterday are ready.

โœ” The products manufactured in India are exported worldwide.

An appositive provides extra information about a noun.

Mistake 1: Misplaced Modifier

โŒ The teacher spoke to the student carrying a laptop.

(Who is carrying the laptop?)

โœ” The teacher spoke to the student who was carrying a laptop.


Mistake 2: Overloading a Sentence

โŒ The student sitting in the classroom near the window wearing glasses reading a book was absent.

โœ” The student who was sitting near the window and reading a book was absent.

Combine the sentences using post-modification.

The man is my uncle. He is standing near the gate.

โœ” The man standing near the gate is my uncle.
