These words help us talk about groups, choices, and individuals. However, many learners confuse them because they seem similar.

📘 What Are Determiners?

Determiners are words placed before nouns to provide information about quantity, possession, or specificity.

Examples:

  • This book
  • My friend
  • Several students

The determiners we’ll discuss today are:

  • All
  • Both
  • Either
  • Neither
  • Each

1️⃣ ALL: Referring to an Entire Group

All means every member of a group without exception.

🔹 Structure:

  • All + plural noun
  • All + uncountable noun

✅ Examples:

  • All students must submit their assignments.
  • All the books are on the table.
  • All information should be verified.

💡 Tip: Use all when referring to a complete group or quantity.


2️⃣ BOTH: Referring to Two People or Things Together

Both means the two together.

🔹 Structure:

  • Both + plural noun
  • Both of + object pronoun

✅ Examples:

  • Both students passed the exam.
  • Both of them speak English fluently.
  • Both books are interesting.

⚠️ Common Mistake:

❌ Both the student is absent.
✔ Both students are absent.


3️⃣ EITHER: Referring to One of Two

Either means one or the other of two choices.

🔹 Structure:

  • Either + singular noun
  • Either of + plural noun/pronoun

✅ Examples:

  • You can choose either option.
  • Either of the answers is acceptable.
  • We can travel on either day.

💡 Remember: Either = one of two.


4️⃣ NEITHER: Referring to Not One and Not the Other

Neither means not one and not the other.

🔹 Structure:

  • Neither + singular noun
  • Neither of + plural noun/pronoun

✅ Examples:

  • Neither answer is correct.
  • Neither of them attended the meeting.
  • Neither student understood the question.

⚠️ Common Mistake:

❌ Neither of them are ready.
✔ Neither of them is ready.


5️⃣ EACH: Referring to Individuals Separately

Each focuses on individual members of a group, one by one.

🔹 Structure:

  • Each + singular noun
  • Each of + plural noun/pronoun

✅ Examples:

  • Each student received a certificate.
  • Each of the participants was interviewed.
  • The teacher spoke to each child individually.

💡 Difference:

  • Each = individual focus
  • All = group focus
