What Is an Embedded Clause?
An embedded clause is a clause that is placed inside another sentence rather than standing alone.
👉 It is “embedded” (inserted) within a main clause.
🔍 Simple Example
👉 Basic sentence:
She is coming.
👉 With embedded clause:
I think that she is coming.
✔ “that she is coming” = embedded clause
✔ It acts as the object of “think”
🧩 Why Use Embedded Clauses?
It helps you:
✔ Express ideas more clearly
✔ Combine multiple ideas smoothly
✔ Sound more formal and fluent
✔ Write better essays and reports
📚 Types of Embedded Clauses
1️⃣ Noun Clauses (Most Common)
These clauses act as nouns in a sentence.
🔹 Structure:
Main clause + that/if/whether/wh-word + clause
✅ Examples:
✔ I believe that he is honest.
✔ She doesn’t know where he lives.
✔ We discussed whether the plan would work.
👉 These clauses function as object, subject, or complement.
2️⃣ Embedded Questions
Instead of direct questions, we use polite, indirect forms.
🔹 Structure:
Intro phrase + question clause (no inversion)
✅ Examples:
❌ Direct: Where is he?
✔ Embedded: Can you tell me where he is?
❌ Direct: What did she say?
✔ Embedded: Do you know what she said?
💡 Important Rule:
👉 No question word order (no inversion)
3️⃣ Relative Embedded Clauses
It gives more information about a noun.
✅ Examples:
✔ The book that you gave me is interesting.
✔ The person who called you is waiting outside.
👉 These are similar to relative clauses, but function as embedded structures.
4️⃣ Conditional Embedded Clauses
Used inside another sentence to express condition.
✅ Examples:
✔ I will help you if you need assistance.
✔ Let me know if you are available.
🧠 Advanced Use (C1–C2 Level)
Embedded clauses are often used to express:
✔ Opinions
✔ Uncertainty
✔ Formal tone
✔ Complex reasoning
🔹 Examples:
✔ It is widely believed that English is a global language.
✔ Researchers argue that this method is effective.
✔ I am not sure whether this solution will work.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
❌ I don’t know where is he.
✔ I don’t know where he is.
❌ Can you tell me what is your name?
✔ Can you tell me what your name is?
